Understanding the Nisab Threshold for Zakat
Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must possess before the obligation of Zakat applies. It serves as a threshold to ensure that only those with sufficient means are required to give. The concept comes directly from the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who established two benchmarks: gold and silver. The gold Nisab is set at 85 grams (approximately 7.5 tola), while the silver Nisab is 612 grams (approximately 52.5 tola). If a Muslim's total Zakatable wealth exceeds either threshold for a full lunar year (hawl), they must pay 2.5% of that wealth as Zakat.
The Gold vs. Silver Debate
At the time of the Prophet, the monetary value of 85 grams of gold and 612 grams of silver were roughly equivalent. However, in the modern era, gold has appreciated far more than silver, creating a significant gap between the two thresholds. The Hanafi school of jurisprudence generally recommends using the silver standard because it results in a lower Nisab, meaning more Muslims qualify to pay Zakat and more wealth reaches the poor. Other schools, including many Shafi'i and Hanbali scholars, favor the gold standard as a more stable and commonly referenced measure. Both positions are valid, and Muslims are encouraged to consult a knowledgeable scholar or their local Islamic authority to determine which standard to follow.
How to Use This Calculator
Select either the gold or silver standard using the toggle above. The calculator will display the Nisab threshold in grams and its approximate equivalent in five major currencies: USD, GBP, PKR, IDR, and BDT. The bar chart provides a visual comparison of the two standards. Please note that the metal prices and exchange rates used here are illustrative approximations. Always verify current market prices on your Zakat due date to ensure accuracy.
